The U.S. Congress has voted to extend the current Hours of Service (HOS) rules, vacated July 16, 2004 by a federal
court, for a period of one year.
A federal appeals court had declared the existing hours of service rules illegal, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), backed by groups representing
shippers and their carriers, said reverting to old rules would throw logistics operations into chaos.
The congressional action now gives the agency up to a year, barring further extensions by Congress, to meet
the court mandate. As a result, the new hours of service rules implemented in January will remain in effect until the FMCSA develops a new set of regulations governing hours of service, or Sept. 30, 2005,
whichever comes first. |
