CN Introduces Punitive New Storage Policy at Brampton

Following is an excerpt from a letter issued by CN's Customer Support Centre in Winnipeg:

"Throughout the past year CN has introduced a number of initiatives to improve CN's ability to handle growth in Toronto. This has enabled CN to process over 50% more units than in 2002.

In order to support continued growth, CN is introducing the following two initiatives:

In mid-January 2005 the existing gate appointment system for export shipments will be expanded to include destination port. By better managing the volume of exports arriving at the terminal in advance of their shipping date CN will be able to provide a more fluid and consistent service. CN will provide priority access to cut-off day appointments provided the shipper (or their agent) submits the appointment request within the defined time period.

The volume of import traffic grounded at the beginning of the week remains high. This is a direct result of limited pick-ups on weekends. As of 1 January 2005, the free time allowance for loaded import containers will be standardized at 2 days regardless of the day the container is placed into storage."

Important Note:
The tariff for storing import containers at CN's Brampton Intermodal terminal will be $200 per day for each day or part thereof in excess of two days. This new policy may be very problematic for shipments that are cleared late in the week but are not removed by Friday - thereby attracting storage charges over the weekend. A similar problem exists with the case of shipments arriving at the terminal on Friday. For example the two day free time for a container grounded anytime on Friday will start at 04:00 on Saturday and end at 04:00 Monday. Containers not removed prior to 04:00 Monday will be subject to storage charges.
